In Memoriam Henry Keizer

Henry Keizer, President and CEO of ‘the Facultatieve Group’ passed away completely unexpectedly on the 5th October 2019.

In 1996, Henry Keizer was approached by the then Supervisory Board of ‘the Facultatieve’ and invited to manage and develop the organisation – which was derived from the Royal Dutch Cremation Society (established in 1874) – in line with the international ambitions. Two years later, he became President and CEO of ‘the Facultatieve Group’ which, under his leadership, grew into a leading and well respected international organisation with branches all over the world.

He held the position of President and CEO of ‘the Facultatieve Group’ for more than 20 years. During those years, the Group has enjoyed enormous growth both nationally and  internationally.

The number of cemeteries and crematoria within our group, in the Netherlands has expanded, and now includes three crematoria  in Germany. Under his leadership  Facultatieve Technologies (FT) has also  established a strong and respected position worldwide.

Henry Keizer was passionately involved in a number of international organisations and had a particular soft spot for his charitable organisations and was always willing and ready to give advice and guidance to young people.

In Henry Keizer, we have lost a striking man with a charming personality, enormous knowledge and amazing managerial qualities. But it was particularly someone with great energy, enthusiasm, good humour, warm friendship that will be genuinely missed.

We have received countless messages of sympathy from organisations around the world of his unexpected passing and these sentiments are perhaps best expressed in an online forum in the funeral sector which simply said; ‘Rest in peace beautiful person!’.

City of Cologne opts for ‘the Facultatieve’

After a thorough European tender process, this week the City of Cologne chose ‘the Facultatieve Group’ as operator of the crematorium in Cologne. Cologne Crematorium is Facultatieve Germany’s third, after the crematorium Memmingen and the Crematorium Niederrhein Willich. The Crematorium in Cologne was opened in 1937 and carries out around 4,000 cremations per year. The building is listed.

Now that the decision has been taken by the City Council, intensive consultation will take place over the coming months to implement the agreements. The expectation is that the actual transfer of operations may take place as early as in March 2019.

Stefan van Dorsser, director of Facultatieve Deutschland GmbH is delighted: “With over 100 years of experience, six crematoria in the Netherlands and two crematoria in Germany within our Group, we knew we were in with a great chance. We are thrilled and very grateful that the City of Cologne has shown such confidence in us. Our top priorities are always quality of service, cooperation and respect for the deceased and the bereaved. Cologne Crematorium clearly has the potential to become a pioneer in Germany, just like our other crematoria. And together with the City, that is exactly what we will strive to achieve. A great challenge that we relish.”

Crematorium Duisburg opts for FT

Safe, efficient, silent and reliable. The experience with the first High Speed Cremulator was so good that in March, the crematorium in Duisburg purchased not only a second Cremulator but also commissioned an Ash Transfer Cabinet from FT. “The High Speed Cremulator is very quiet, reliable and unusually fast,” says Thomas Lewen, the crematorium’s Technical Director. “Ash is processed in just three minutes, with the Ash Transfer Cabinet then filling the ash container dust-free. We like working with these machines. The Ash Transfer Cabinet is very easy to operate for our staff and also ensures a safe working environment.”

Crematorium Haskerpoort opened

Crematorium Haskerpoort (municipality De Friese Meren in the northern Netherlands) was officially opened on Friday 29 September 2017. Funerary service provider Van der Zwaag Uitvaartzorg BV from Oranjewoud commissioned FT to install an FT III cremator with filter. This advanced cremator meets the most stringent environmental requirements.

A fully automatic insertion trolley was also fitted. To process the ash, the crematorium opted for a High Speed Cremulator, a PLC-controlled ash grinder that directly separates the ash residues from any metal objects. Combined with the powerful Ash Transfer Cabinet, any dust which may be released is directly extracted.

Successful second Westerveld Fair

Westerveld Cemetery & Crematorium held the ‘Westerveld Fair’ for the second time on Sunday 11 June. Hundreds of people visited the attractive outdoor fair on this sunny Sunday. Many positive comments could be heard from both visitors and exhibitors.

Art & Nature
There was a wide variety of exhibitors at the Fair displaying and talking about their products and services covering art, crafts and nature. “Really nice to experience the park in a completely different way. It’s really beautiful here amongst all the greenery. There were special works of art to enjoy and even buy if you wanted, just as with the many different plants, herbs and flowers. It was a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon!”, according to one of the visitors.

Times gone by
There was also a chapel outside where the visitors could listen to music and enjoy short stage plays. The ‘tribune’ proved to be popular, because that is where Jan Jacob Slauerhoff, Frits Portielje and Heintje and Louis Davids told interesting stories about their past and the links they have with Westerveld memorial park. Marsmelody provided live music and a falconer was present with beautiful birds of prey and owls. “We organized the Fair so that people could become pleasantly acquainted with our memorial park”, said Carla Bosua, director of Westerveld Cemetery & Crematorium, “and it’s been a great success. The lovely products shown by the exhibitors, the performances, the catering and of course the fantastic weather all helped to create a really pleasant atmosphere.”
